(Ali'i-wahine) KAHAHANA (KAPALIKAUKINI)

Kahahana's other name Kapalikaukini is given by Desha in his book  "Kamehameha and His Warriori Kekuhaupio" (page 484). She is an eyewitness to Kamehameha's death. A member of the Kamehameha family household, and a little girl at the time, she attended the deathbed of Kamehameha as a kahili bearer and was sent by the dying king to fetch Keopuolani when he was ready to announce the kapus to be observed after his passing.

Historian of ancient times in the Hawaiian Islands; descendant of Keawemauhili; his writings were utilized by Stephen Langhern Desha Sr. (1859-1934) as a significant source for articles he wrote that were originally published in Ka Hoku o Hawaii (The Star of Hawai‘i) between December 16, 1920 and September 11, 1924, and later translated by Frances N. Frazier and published as Kamehameha and his Warrior Kekūhaupi‘o. (Honolulu: Kamehameha Schools Press, 2000).

A genealogy for S.L.K. Peleioholani, by another genealogist, appeared in a long running series of newspaper articles on the genealgies of the chiefs in the newspaper Ka Makaainana. These articles ran in 1896 and were run weekly. The installment on Oct 5, 1896 included a section entitled "Ko Solomona Lehuanui Ma". It is filled with very severe errors. Ironically, Peleioholani would publish his great genealogy masterpiece in this same paper 7 years later in 1903.

Oinaku Aina KEOMALU (see INAKUAINA KEOMALU)

OINAKU AINA, sometimes called "Oinake Aina Keomalu",  is a mistaken identity.

This real person is a woman named "Inakuaina Keomalu". After much research, it seems that her name and birthdates got corrupted over time.

Oinaku Aina (Keomalu) and Inakuaina Keomalu are the same person. Unfortunately, they have been handled as two people and have separate sets of LDS temple ordinances. For that reason, this record is being kept in the genealogy to aoid confusion in the future.

Here is what happened: Oinaku Aina ("Aina") lost her last name "Keomalu", because it was assumed that was her married name. One of her husband's is referred to as Paakaula Keomalu and her son with him is named Joseph Keomalu. But what happened was this: the son was named after the mother. The father was simply Paakaula, born in Waipio in 1850. In later record keeping, people estimated the woman Oinaku Aina's birthdate at around 1850 at Waipio to match her husband. They also gave her last name to Paakaula, assuming the boy child was carrying the father's name. In this way, Paakaula became Paakaula Keomalu.

But the records on the original Keomalu man and his descendant's do not support a person with the birth name Paakaula Keomalu. He was also born in the wrong place to have that name.

It is, in fact, Oinaku Aina who was born Keomalu. She was born Inakuaina Keomalu. Her parents were named Keomalu (k.) and Kahaumanu (w.), that is why my grandfather has a sister named Bertha KAHAUMANU Kekoolani (she is named after her great grandmother). She was also older (age 37) when she gave birth to her son Joseph Keomalu Sr. (son of Paakaula) and later (age 38) to Charles Kekoolani (son of Solomon Peleioholani). So this has thrown people off to.

It may turn out that the birthdates for the original Keomalu family are off, but there should not be a very large shift. This settles the matter of "who was Oinaku Aina"? (A long standing mystery in our family).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oinaku Aina has a whole set of temple records generated by her descendants who were unaware of her true name. It was the wish of her great grandaughter, Amy Kekoolani Akao, that the confusion be ended by positively identifying who Aina was. This is now accomplished.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alternate birth date for Oinaku AIna is 1953.
